Mimesis and Metaphor

"Representation", "imitation" and "mirroring" have proved to be insufficient translations of the concept of mimesis. Walter Benjamin's notion of "mimetic potential" offers a different view on the qualities of mimesis. Benjamin stresses the importance of language and its mediality to mimesis; for him language is the "höchste Stufe des mimetischen Verhaltens und das vollkommenste Archiv der unsinnlichen Ähnlichkeit" (Benjamin 1991, Bd. II/1, 213) He considers mimesis on the level of linguistic mediality. In the following I will try to outline the mimetic potential of metaphors in literary texts which focus on their linguistic mediality. As Paul Ricoeur suggests, "the possibility that metaphorical discourse says something about reality collides with the apparent constitution of poetic discourse, which seems to be essentially non-referential and centred on itself. To this non-referential conception of poetic discourse I oppose the idea that the suspension of literal reference is the condition for the release of a power of second-degree reference which is properly poetic reference. ANANAS - A Framework For Analyzing Android Applications

Android is an open software platform for mobile devices with a large market share in the smartphone sector. The openness of the system as well as its wide adoption lead to an increasing amount of malware developed for this platform. ANANAS is an expandable and modular framework for analyzing Android applications. It takes care of common needs for dynamic malware analysis and provides an interface for the development of plugins. Adaptability and expandability have been main design goals during the development process. An abstraction layer for simple user interaction and phone event simulation is also part of the framework. It allows an analyst to script the required user simulation or phone events on demand or adjust the simulation to his needs. Six plugins have been developed for ANANAS. They represent well known techniques for malware analysis, such as system call hooking and network traffic analysis. The focus clearly lies on dynamic analysis, as five of the six plugins are dynamic analysis methods.Comment: Paper accepted at First Int. Russland und China - wie beeinflusst der Krieg in der Ukraine die Beziehungen? Was sind die Auswirkungen auf Europa und Österreich?

Seit Februar 2022 hat China seine Beziehungen zu Russland im Wesentlichen auf demselben Vorkriegskurs der schrittweisen Annäherung gehalten. Gleichzeitig ist Beijing aber um die wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen zur EU und die strategische Stabilität in Nordostasien besorgt, und hat sich deshalb dazu entschieden, keine substanziellen Lieferungen an schweren Waffen und entsprechender Munition an Russland vorzunehmen. Österreich und die EU sollten Chinas Bemühen um gute Beziehungen sowohl zu Russland als auch zur EU anerkennen, und Beijing in seiner Entscheidung, an diesem Ansatz festzuhalten, bestärken. Außerdem sollten sie China in ihren Überlegungen zu möglichen Friedensfindungen und zu einer nachhaltigen Sicherheitsordnung nach dem Krieg berücksichtigen.Since February 2022, China has basically maintained its relations with Russia on the same pre-war course towards gradually tightening relations. However, at the same time, Beijing is concerned about the future of economic relations with the EU, strategic stability in Northeast Asia, and has therefore chosen not to make substantive deliveries of heavy weapons and ammunition to Russia. Austria and the EU should recognize China's efforts to retain good relations with both Russia and the EU, should seek to reinforce Beijing's decision to stick with this approach, and should take China into account in their deliberations about ways towards peace and a sustainable post-war security order

China-Russia relations in Central Asia

In dreifacher Weise soll diese Masterarbeit zur Evaluierung der modernen sino-russischen Beziehungen beitragen. Zunächst wird in einem nicht erschöpfend behandelten Feld, den Energiebeziehungen und deren Beeinflussung durch Zentralasien, eine umfassende Faktendichte hergestellt. Zweitens wird die theoretische Herangehensweise früherer Studien verfeinert, durch die Etablierung eines neoklassisch-realistischen - perzeptionstheoretischen Ansatzes. Es wird gezeigt, dass unter auf systemischem Druck basierenden "policy"-Alternativen, interne Kräfte die Auswahl bedingen. Unter diesen ist die Perzeption durch "einflussreiche Eliten" - hierunter fallen auch Experten für internationale Beziehungen - bedeutend. Diese Perzeption wird durch eine Analyse des akademischen Diskurses unter Heranziehung bedeutender chinesisch-sprachiger Fachzeitschriften untersucht. Damit wird ein dritter Beitrag zum Feld geleistet, da Studien zu modernen sino-russischen Beziehungen bisher keine chinesisch-sprachige Literatur heranziehen. Der Forschungsfrage nachgehend, wie sich der zentralasiatische Energiesektor auf die sino-russischen Beziehungen auswirkt, werden drei chronologische Untersuchungsphasen festgelegt. In der ersten Phase, von 1997 bis 2001 – erst in diesen Jahren begannen Chinas Energiebeziehungen mit Zentralasien –, wurde die Problematik dieser Arbeit noch nicht behandelt. In der zweiten Phase von 2001 bis 2008 sehen chinesische Autoren vor allem eine russisch-amerikanische Rivalität in Zentralasien auch durch die jeweiligen Energieinteressen befördert. Erst in der letzten Phase seit der Finanzkrise im Jahr 2008 werden Implikationen für die sino-russischen Beziehungen in breiterer Form diskutiert. Obwohl viele die neuen Kooperationsmöglichkeiten hervorheben, so werden doch auch russische Ängste vor China erkannt. Die umfassenden Überlegungen zur präventiven Entschärfung eventueller Friktionen führen zu einer Relativierung früherer westlicher Prognosen, die schon für die nähere Zukunft ein Auseinanderbrechen der „Strategischen Partnerschaft“ zwischen Moskau und Peking vorhersagen

Chemical composition, particle geometry, and micro-mechanical strength of barley husks, oat husks, and wheat bran as alternative raw materials for particleboards

Particleboards are used worldwide in various industry segments, like construction and furniture production. Nevertheless, increase in wood prices and logistical challenges urge the particleboard industry to find alternative raw materials. By-products and residues from the agricultural and food industries could offer possibilities for material sourcing at a local level. This study aimed to investigate the chemical composition, particle geometry, anatomical structure, and microtensile characteristics of such material, specifically barley husks (BH), oat husks (OH), and wheat bran (WB). BH and OH were found to have comparable hemicelluloses and lignin contents to industrial wood chips but contained more ash. WB was rich in extractives and showed high buffering capacity. Light microscopy and microcomputed tomography revealed details of leaf structure for BH and OH as well as the multi-layer structure of WB. The ultimate microtensile strength of BH, various OH samples, and WB were respectively 2.77 GPa, 0.84–2.42 GPa, and 1.45 GPa. The results indicated that the studied materials could have potential uses as furnish materials in non-load bearing particleboards, where thermal or acoustic insulation properties are desirable
